{"id":18367,"date":"2025-06-06T16:19:39","date_gmt":"2025-06-06T21:19:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.moelleepiniere.com\/?p=18367"},"modified":"2025-06-06T16:20:32","modified_gmt":"2025-06-06T21:20:32","slug":"brouillon-auto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.moelleepiniere.com\/en\/2025\/06\/brouillon-auto\/","title":{"rendered":"Article de CBC sur les recommandations de M\u00c9MO-Qc dans l&#8217;affaire Normand Meunier"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moelleepiniere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/CBC-451x500.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18368\" width=\"562\" height=\"623\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.moelleepiniere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/CBC-451x500.jpg 451w, https:\/\/www.moelleepiniere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/CBC-135x150.jpg 135w, https:\/\/www.moelleepiniere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/CBC.jpg 760w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 562px) 100vw, 562px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the dozens of people who testified at a coroner&#8217;s inquiry into the death of Normand Meunier, Claude Labelle&nbsp;may be the only one who really understands what he&nbsp;went through.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meunier, a 66-year-old quadriplegic&nbsp;Quebec&nbsp;man,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/montreal\/assisted-death-quadriplegic-quebec-man-er-bed-sore-1.7171209\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">requested medical assistance in dying<\/a> after&nbsp;developing a severe bedsore during a four-day stay in the ER at Saint-J\u00e9r\u00f4me&nbsp;Hospital&nbsp;last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The inquiry has heard over the last several weeks about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/montreal\/quadriplegic-man-medical-assistance-in-dying-coroner-inquiry-1.7526270\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unbearable pain<\/a>&nbsp;he&nbsp;suffered, and how the system <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/montreal\/er-quebec-quadriplegic-man-staff-testify-coroner-s-inquiry-1.7530332\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">failed<\/a> him before he died in March&nbsp;2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;In my opinion, it was the right thing to do,&#8221; Labelle&nbsp;said of Meunier&#8217;s decision in an interview with CBC News after his testimony Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It was very, very, very hard for him \u2014 a big, severe wound.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/1.7553543.1749151275!\/fileImage\/httpImage\/image.jpg_gen\/derivatives\/original_1180\/claude-labelle.jpg?im=\" alt=\"Closeup of a man's face. (CBC News)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Like Meunier, Labelle is quadriplegic, uses a wheelchair&nbsp;and is prone to severe bedsores on his buttocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;As soon as you have pressure or redness, it&#8217;s the beginning of a possible sore, so what you have to do is relieve the pressure on that red spot,&#8221;&nbsp;Labelle&nbsp;said. &#8220;I have to be on my side \u2014&nbsp;one side or the other, never on my back.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That can mean days or even weeks of being bedridden in uncomfortable positions while waiting for a sore to heal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key to preventing such sores is to change positions every two hours, and to use&nbsp;a special pressure mattress for sleeping or resting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/1.7195235.1715008891!\/cumulusImage\/httpImage\/image.jpg_gen\/derivatives\/original_1180\/normand-meunier.jpg?im=\" alt=\"A close up photo of a man's face\"\/><figcaption>Meunier was on a stretcher in the ER at Saint-J\u00e9r\u00f4me Hospital for four days in January 2024 without access to a special pressure mattress that helps prevent bedsores. (Ivanoh Demers\/CBC)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Meunier was unable to get access to such a mattress during his stay in the ER, the inquiry has heard.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like Meunier, Labelle is frequently in hospital, and he&#8217;s also had difficulty accessing those mattresses. He said&nbsp;each time, he has to re-explain to hospital staff the care he needs to prevent bedsores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Labelle said when he does that, he&#8217;s often&nbsp;dismissed by hospital staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You have to fight to get care.&nbsp;That&#8217;s nonsense,&#8221; Labelle said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>&#8216;At the end of my rope&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Labelle&nbsp;told the inquiry how he hit his own breaking point during his most recent hospital stay in January, when he developed a sore and&nbsp;his discharge was delayed several times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When the doctor told me I had to stay even longer, I said no, that&#8217;s it,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Labelle asked his doctor that day if he could request medical assistance in dying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I was at the end of my rope,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The doctor asked him if he had a date in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I said &#8216;as soon as possible&#8217;. I said &#8216;if you can do it today, let&#8217;s do it today, I can&#8217;t deal with it,'&#8221; he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/montreal\/home-care-quebec-bedsores-hospital-visits-1.7457009\">Home-care nurses told her not to worry about her bedsore. She was hospitalized the next day<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Labelle said at the time, he feared he might be bedridden for the rest of his life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I had made my peace with being disabled, with being in a wheelchair the rest of my life, but not in a hospital bed,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His doctor suggested he take time to discuss his request for assisted death with his family before making a final decision.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He ultimately decided not to go ahead with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s still in my head. I don&#8217;t have any sores right now.&nbsp;I don&#8217;t have any signs of a sore, which encourages me,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;But it&#8217;s fragile.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>A dozen requests for assisted death<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An advocacy group representing people with spinal cord injuries told the inquiry cases like Labelle&#8217;s and Meunier&#8217;s are &#8220;the tip of the iceberg.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walter Zelaya, president of <em>Mo\u00eblle \u00c9pini\u00e8re et Motricit\u00e9 Qu\u00e9bec<\/em>&nbsp;(MEMO Quebec) also testified Tuesday at the inquiry, which in its final&nbsp;week heard recommendations from experts about how to prevent such incidents from happening again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/1.7553564.1749151907!\/fileImage\/httpImage\/image.jpg_gen\/derivatives\/original_1180\/walter-zelaya.jpg?im=\" alt=\"a closeup of a man's face\"\/><figcaption>Walter Zelaya, president of Mo\u00eblle \u00c9pini\u00e8re et Motricit\u00e9 Qu\u00e9bec, a group that represents people with spinal cord injuries, testified that Meunier&#8217;s case was the tip of the iceberg, and that 12 members of his group have requested assisted death because of bedsores since 2023. (Radio-Canada La Facture)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;At least 12 members of our association have requested medical assistance in dying due to health problems and a health-care system that doesn&#8217;t take care of them,&#8221; Zelaya told CBC in an interview after his testimony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zelaya said all the requests came since the province <a href=\"https:\/\/ici.radio-canada.ca\/nouvelle\/1985901\/quebec-adoption-projet-loi-elargissement-aide-medicale-mourir\"><u>loosened the criteria<\/u><\/a> for receiving medically assisted death in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said in most cases, the patients were&nbsp;frustrated that hospitals and CLSCs&nbsp;weren&#8217;t doing enough to help them prevent and treat bedsores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;People are caught between the undue suffering they experience, and ultimately deciding to leave.&nbsp;And they ultimately choose to leave,&#8221; Zelaya said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We understand this decision very well, but it&#8217;s extremely painful to see that these people deep down did not want to die.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Harder for patients since health-care reforms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During his testimony Zelaya showed the inquiry several photos of painful bedsores submitted by members of the group, similar to the one that Meunier developed in hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His group keeps a registry of&nbsp;members who have bedsores, and there are currently dozens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/health\/bed-sores-joseph-brant-credit-valley-hospital-go-public-1.6621965\">GO PUBLICPreventable bedsore contributed to this man&#8217;s painful death, and they&#8217;re on the rise<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Zelaya said things became harder for members of the group in 2015&nbsp;following&nbsp;the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/montreal\/ga%C3%A9tan-barrette-s-health-care-revolution-what-you-need-to-know-1.2946171\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">health-care reforms<\/a> of the previous Liberal government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the centralization of administration and decision-making at the time meant many local institutions \u2014&nbsp;individual hospitals and rehab centres \u2014&nbsp;lost their governance structures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It became <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/montreal\/bill-10-stirs-opposition-from-quebec-anglophone-groups-1.2837007\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">harder for patients<\/a> with specialized needs to request care and services, and harder for them to complain when things went wrong, he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zelaya said that&#8217;s led to an increase in patients developing serious bedsores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MEMO Quebec made several recommendations to the inquiry, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Creating dedicated wound clinics to care for patients with pressure sores.<\/li><li>Improving communications between home-care services and hospitals so patients&#8217; care plans automatically follow them&nbsp;when they&#8217;re hospitalized.<\/li><li>Making sure all hospitals and care homes have an appropriate supply of easily accessible pressure mattresses.<\/li><li>Training on prevention and care of bedsores for all health-care workers.<\/li><li>Recognizing and valuing the expertise of patients with pressure wounds.<\/li><li>Ensuring each patient who suffers from chronic bedsores is followed by a family doctor.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Other groups also made recommendations to the inquiry this week, including health-care institutions and professional orders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coroner Dave Kimpton will now take time to consider all the testimony before delivering a final report with recommendations, which is expected in three months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>&#8216;I have faith this will lead to something&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Labelle said when MEMO Quebec first asked him to testify at the inquiry, he was skeptical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I wondered if it was a waste of time, if after all this, no one is going to do anything,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img src=\"https:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/1.7553552.1749151571!\/fileImage\/httpImage\/image.jpg_gen\/derivatives\/original_1180\/claude-labelle.jpg?im=\" alt=\"a man in a motorized wheelchair in a courthouse hallway, with his son walking beside him\"\/><figcaption>Labelle, pictured here with his son who accompanied him to the coroner&#8217;s inquiry, said talking with his family convinced him not to go through with medically assisted death.
